1. What's New

Hello Throwers!

I was lucky enough to find another 'Sleeper" thrower a few days ago. My definition of a "sleeper thrower" goes like this...

To me, a sleeper thrower is someone who has never tried throwing before, has never seen anyone throw, and could pretty much care less about learning to throw. And then they pick up a set of knives and stick 5 in a row from 12 feet without even blinking? Can you say "Born To Throw!"

A fellow came to appraise our home a few days ago and when he got outside to the backyard/knife throwing range, his curiosity got the best of him. He came back inside after a while with a strange look on his face and asked me what the 7 foot wall of logs and bullseyes were for?

I've seen this look many times before. Its kind of an 'unsure' look. Their brain is struggling with what its seen. They HAVE to know what all the targets are for, because their curiosity is driving them nuts! But on the other hand, do they really want to know what they're for? You can tell by the look on their faces that they're thinking 2 separate thoughts at once. They're thinking:

"This could be the coolest thing in the world" AND "How the heck do I get out of here when things go bad?" I just love that look :-) lol

Anyway, the appraiser guy threw about 15 knives and stuck 13 of them from 1 spin (about 13 feet for him).

Its not too often I run into these 'sleepers'. The majority of us have to practice, and learn from any source we can get good info from. So if you're one of us regular people who isn't blessed with the natural ability some of these other jerks possess (did I say that out loud?) then I would recommend learning from someone who has some experience. Getting an instructional book or video is also a great idea.

A good book or video will teach you the basics and everything else that comes after the basics (like different ways to control rotation, different stances, grips, tricks etc.) And Oh, imagine that. We just happen to have one of the best instructional videos ever produced, available in our store! (I can't recommend it enough!) So if you want to learn to throw like the pros, then check out the following page:

SEEING A SKILLED LEFTY THROW IS ONE THING, BUT STANDING THERE WATCHING A 'CACK-HANDED' BEGINNER IS (ALMOST) TERRIFYING!
By John Craggs

I've started teaching my nephew to throw and it really freaks me out because he's a lefty. Having grown up in a right handed world he's quite adept at reversing my instructions/demonstrations, but...

Seeing a skilled lefty throw knives is one thing, but standing there and watching a 'cack-handed' beginner is (almost) terrifying. But he'll get there. It suddenly fell into place and they were 'grouping' well. His natural distance is a little longer than mine. All to the right of the target board, but we can cure that tendency with correct foot placement once he gets consistent.

His wife had a go too, and once she got past the idea that you throw it like a dart, and learned to throw it with a bit more force she made it stick a few times. Her distance was about a foot less then mine, probably due to too much wrist 'snap', but I could train that out of her in a few sessions. (Classic 'girly' throws ;-) I let her have a few throws with a longer/heavier knife, 16.5" and about 1 1/4lb in weight. The extra weight provided more force and smoothness. Interesting experiment (May try her with hatchets next time).

Had a few other throwing 'virgins' try it too, and quite enjoyed analysing and correcting for them. But the lefties (only 2 so far) still freak me out.

Must get my daughter started properly as well, now she lives nearer.

A thoroughly enjoyable evening session, with a chance to 'show off' a little at start and finish, and some surprisingly enjoyable teaching time in between.
