1. What's New

Hey Flingers!

Time for some more great "throwing" info!

FRONTIER HAWK IMPOVEMENT
Cold Steel has just upgraded their Frontier Throwing Hawks! Before the head was just slid on to the handle and pounded on with a few quick raps. It was then held in place only by the snug fit. So every few throws you had to give it a few more raps to tighten the fit.

But now they've added an allen head "set screw" that goes through the back of the hawk head and screws in until its "snug" against the handle. This is a great improvement because now you don't have to worry about the head loosening up or coming off after a few throws. And if it does loosen up, just grab your allen wrench and give the set screw a twist!

(The much fancier, higher quality, and more expensive Firestone SportAxe, designed by Arlan D. Lothe, has this very same design worked into it so you know its gotta be a good one!)

NEW CLUB IN TEXAS CALLED THE "H.A.K.S."
There is a new throwing club in Texas! YEE_HAW! :-) A couple of new throwing addicts, who I'm lucky enough to be able to call my friends, have recently started a club in Houston, TX. The club is called the "Houston Area Knife Stickers", (aka HAKS).

The founders of the club are named Ron Thomas and Tim Jester and I can't say enough great things about these guys. I threw knives with Ron and his wife Shereen in Austin, TX last year at the Central US Knife Throwing Championships (where I was lucky enough to win 1st place in the Overall Intermediate category. WHOO-HOO! :-)

Both Ron and his wife stayed out til the wee hours playing games and throwing everything we could think of! We were all sitting outside of Mr. Bainton's studio and having a great time under his covered and well lit range! Joe Darrah, Dave Fettig, Todd Abrams and Micah Posada were also there that night helping to bring out the chaos! It was a night with friends I won't soon forget!

And I met Tim Jester on my trip to Pennsylvania earlier this year when I went to "hang" with Joe "Brokenfeather" Darrah and his family. Joe and his son Shane took me on the vacation of a lifetime to do some Smallmouth Bass fishing in Maine! Oh yeah, we also stopped in New Jersey on the way for a perfectly run throwing event put on by Thomi Hawk for the WWAC/WKTG in the town of Netcong! It was the 2004 East Coast National WWAC/WKTG Championships. Man thats a mouthful!

I could go on and on about the events (and the Hall of Fame Inductions and the Banquet too!!!) but instead I'll just tell you there are plenty of pics and even more details for these events and many others under our CLUBS/EVENTS section:

Once you're on that page just scroll to the bottom and you'll see the PAST EVENTS link. Click that and you're on your way to competitive bliss! :-) Well maybe not. But there are a bunch of great pictures of people doing what we all love to do... Throw Knives!!!

Well, I gotta go start some Christmas shopping! :-) Have a safe and Happy Holiday!

ANOTHER GREAT DRILL FOR IMPROVING ACCURACY
Part II of II
By Roy Hutchinson

Continued From Issue 109

Back to the knives...

For what its worth, my opinion is that knife throwers scores would vastly improve if he/she were to throw the correct amount of knives without retrieving any. It is always the first throw that gets your "eye" in and your composure settled.

So I have come up with this idea which I have been trying for a couple of weeks. My target is one round, large enough to mark 5 bulls in a line across the centre, with 1 inch of bare wood between the bulls.

A dotted 8 inch circle is put around each bull, and these dotted 8 inch circles overlap, in similar fashion to the Olympic Games rings. There is no particular reason for this overlap, it just can't be avoided. Either way it is not important.

The 5 knives are then marked 1 to 5 with a black marker on the blade, and the 5 knives are held ready for the throw in numerical order, so as there is no need to look at each knife before the throw and upset concentration.

The throwing is then simple. The first knife is thrown at the left hand bull, followed by the second knife at the next left hand bull, and so on.

Those throwers, like the dart players who like to keep their body facing the target at exactly the same angle for each throw, can make a small side step to the right after each throw. The small side step, is only 2 or 3 inches, and has no effect whatsoever on composure.

Then it is easy to see if a knife is in its right circle, and if a knife is far from its right bull, it is easy to mark the score by noting the knife number.

If you practice this way, at least your knives won't keep striking each other, and every knife scores... hopefully! :-)
