I've said this many times before but I have to say it again, "Knife throwers are some of the nicest people I've ever met!" In the last issue I asked for your opinions about "standardizing rules" in sanctioned competitions. I checked my e-mail a few hours after I sent the last issue out and I was flooded with responses! I can't thank you guys enough for taking the time to express your opinions and the reasoning behind them. NEW THROWING KNIFE For about the last 3 years I've been thinking about releasing a "Throwzini" throwing knife. When I started to consider this project I knew the knife would have to be one "tough piece of metal". It would have to be practically indestructible and even more importantly, it would have to be a superb thrower! Bottom line, it had to be a great knife for an even better price. So I contacted a few friends and "brain stormed" or maybe it was a "dust storm"... I'm not sure but when the smoke cleared we had a smart design that threw beautifully! From the handle or the blade, the knife slides out of your hand like its made outta "budduh", (thats "butter" for those who can't understand my NY accent :-) The knives are 14 inches in length and they are made from an L6 Steel that is virtually indestructible! This will be a limited run of only 100 knives and they only cost $27.95 each! But remember supplies are very limited. GUEST COLUMN THINGS I CONSIDER WHEN MAKING KNIVES by Burl Carl As far as knife shapes, I've mostly been throwing bowie style knives but have recently designed a couple of dagger styles that work quite well. To be more precise, it really doesn't matter to me if the throwing knife is single edged or double edged. I DO prefer a straight handle for throwing instead of a curved, drop end pommel like the Hibben knives. That style of knife handle tends to add too much rotation as it leaves my hand. Since I mainly throw for tournaments here in the States we are required to throw longer, heavier knives. Typically I throw a 14 inch knife. This means the knives I'm throwing are about 14 ounces. (A "general" rule for determining the weight when you make a throwing knife is 1 ounce per 1 inch for the length.) However, since I make my own custom knives they weigh more because I use pretty thick steel. They typically range from 3/16 to 5/16 inch in thickness. I haven't worked with stainless steel. It's very expensive here in the states compared to common high carbon steels. 1080, 1084, 1095, 5160 high carbon steels are what I've used in the past. A couple of heat treaters, that temper my blades, don't like the 1095 because the blades have been known to twist during the tempering process. They usually have to clamp them down to prevent this from happening. High carbon steel works just fine if tempered between 40 to 45 Rockwell. Any higher than 47 RW and it could break, and I've had a couple do that. They were tempered at 49 RW. Any lower than maybe 30 to 35 Rockwell and it's too soft. I thought about using tool steels (D2, A1, O2) but they are even more expensive than stainless. I prefer throwing a knife from the handle but in contests I typically do much better when I throw by the blade. Go figure :) As far as etching, I've thought about having someone do something on my knives. I'd say it would be OK for a logo, but to etch the whole blade is overkill. It would add extra cost to the knife that the average thrower might not want to pay for. If you were to put markings, etchings, or whatever, on the blade I'd do so mainly to add a rough spot where the thumb or fingers are placed to give them a better grip on the blade. That way the knife wouldn't be so prone to slipping out of the throwers grip. I have a problem throwing by the blade when the weather is cold. Where I live the atmosphere is very dry. My hands lack moisture (perspiration) to give it traction on cold days. A roughened up spot on the blade would help get rid of this problem.
