1. What's New

Hello Throwers!

Well it just happened. I was out throwing a few knives the other day and my hands got cold. No more worrying about sweaty hands and knives sticking or not "sliding" out like they should. The cold is creeping up on us!

Everyone still has time to throw, its not that cold yet for you truly addicted throwers, but one thing I will mention is that when it does get too cold to throw, then that is a great time to spend on "Equipment Maintenance".

Things like washing the dirt off of your blades. Use a scotch bright pad for dirt that is really on there or if you're starting to get a bit of rust. (Its a good idea to try and keep your knives clean and dry when you're not using them to keep the rust away.) If you aren't going to use your blades for a while, you can put a light coat of oil on them too.

There are more useful tips on the site about cleaning up the edges of your throwers. To see those just visit our ARTICLES section:

BRINGING OUR SPORT TO THE NEXT LEVEL
by Scott Gracia

I have to tell everyone about a guy in Austin, TX I met last year. You may have heard me mention him a few times in earlier issues. His name is Mike Bainton and I have to say that I think he's doing a fantastic job at taking our sport to the next level.

Mr. Bainton is the founder of the International Knife Throwers Hall of Fame, the IKTHOF Gold Cup competition and the Central United States Knife Throwing Championships. He runs one of the most successful martial arts studios in the country and I'm proud to be able to call him my friend. Another thing Mike likes to dedicate time to is throwing. He's taken 10 first place finishes this year in tournaments all over the country! An amazing feat that will be EXTREMELY difficult to top!

Those accomplishments are only what he has given to our sport the past few years he's been involved. You'd be absolutely amazed at what else he's done in his life!

Back to the topic! Mike's goal for competitive throwing is to have organized competitions with standardized rules throughout the world! Which means we would be able to compete anywhere in the world and know exactly what the tournament rules were going to be.

"We throw this many knives from these distances and they must spin this number of times."

This may not seem like a big deal but it really is. Many competitions taking place these days abide by different rules. Maybe at one tournament they only throw 1 spin and thats it. But at another tournament a thousand miles away they throw 1/2 spin, 1 spin, 1 1/2, 2 and 2 1/2 spins. Imagine if football teams played by one set of rules when they were at home, but a completely different set when they were playing in other states.

Maybe the Green Bay Packers field is 100 yards long but the Minnesota Vikings field is 200 yards. Or the goal posts are this many feet wide in Tampa Bay, but they're only half of that in New York. You might hear things like:

"Well of course they won. They're used to running twice the distance." It just doesn't seem like a level playing field.

BUT! If we have a standard set of rules we would be able to get the very best from every state to compete! Just like most sports today (football, basketball, baseball, martial arts, all Olympic events etc)

Wisconsin could be sending 5 of their very best knife throwers to Texas to compete against 5 of their very best! Oh! And then more people start to get interested. And then maybe the media starts paying more attention! (Uh oh, here I go :-)

Imagine teams traveling to New York or California to compete, (with sponsors footing the bill!) Or going to Germany to throw against the best they have. Its the next step for the sport! Whose going to be the next Brett Favre of knife throwing??? I don't know. But at least you'll know exactly what you need to practice to get there.

I think I might even smell "Olympics" in this some day! Announcers Voice: kshhk "And from the United States we have Jim Tanner from Austin, Texas throwing 2 1/2 spins." kshhk... Its gonna be awesome! :-)

I highly recommend checking out the sites mentioned below. Someday, hopefully soon, we'll have sponsored teams of knife throwers traveling the world and competing! And a huge part of that will be due to the time and hard work Mike Bainton has dedicated to our sport. So thanks Mike! Keep up all the great work you do!
