1. What's New

Whats Happenin' Peoples?!

Lots of things to bring up today, mainly event results and upcoming events, but we also have a great article about throwing "butcher" knives from the "newly relocated to Indiana thrower"... Chuck Fogarty!

I also have to mention that the instructional video offered on my site is now available only on DVD. I called to order more tapes last week and got the news. We are now "upgraded to the 90's :-)

For more details on the Fundamentals of Knife Throwing... DVD just visit:

The International Knife Throwers Hall Of Fame will also be having it's induction ceremonies. There are a number of folks from the WWAC (Wild West Arts Club) who've already been inducted and several more to be this year.

Che Che White Cloud is going to be inducted for Outstanding Impalement Artist of the 20th century, along with Che Che will be another great performer who unfortunately is no longer with us, Chief White Cloud (Che Che's Father). Sylvester and Barbara Braun will be inducted as Wild West Duo of the 20th Century, Thomi Hawk for his Wild West Showmanship and hawk and knife throwing and so is 6 time Las Vegas knife throwing Champion, Michael J. BUTCHER KNIVES... CHEAP AND FUN!
by Chuck Fogarty

For those that haven't tried butcher knives as throwers, they are fine. They won't stand up to wood targets of course but for indoor cardboard targets they work great. They're heavy enough to stick well in the cardboard and the size is usually 10 to 15 inches so a half turn is from 7 to 9 feet.

New butcher knives are expensive to buy but I see them at my local resale shop for 50 cents to $1.50 used. They're really challenging to throw because they're not matched and you find yourself moving up or back a few inches as you throw each knife. Some of them are quite handle heavy which changes the rotation drastically.

A good idea also is to dull the blade because the 1/2 turn throws are by the blade and butcher knives can "get" you with that sharp edge!

There is such a variation in the size, handles, blade length and thickness they make a pretty exotic looking collection. Some butcher knives have very oddly angled blades which makes them interesting.

One great thing about these kitchen knives is the variety you can see. Some are small and light, others are very heavy and cumbersome. There is a great variation of size from really large heavy knives with thick, long blades maybe 3 inches at the top tapering to a point at the end. Other butcher knives can be much smaller and lighter.

There also is a great variety of knives that are probably not "butcher" knives but kitchen knives of some sort. They have varying thickness and lengths and some have curved blades and some have wavy blades a foot or more in length.

These are designed for a specific use in cutting or shaping foods and I'm always thinking of collecting them since a collection would be interesting and varied.

However I'm probably the only one that thinks butcher knives are that interesting. They do throw well at cardboard targets however and used knives are very inexpensive.
