1. What's New

Hi Throwers,

I recently returned from almost a 3 week trip! It was the greatest time I've ever had! I flew to Pennsylvania to meet some friends and attend the WWAC event in Netcong, NJ. Then I flew home for a few days and met back up with them in Maine for a week of Smallmouth Bass fishing! 150 fish in 3 days and a 6lb "Smally" was caught and released by my buddy Shane Darrah... It was HUGE-ONIC! :-)

And then my friend Joe decided I should try deep sea fishing so we headed for New Jersey and went out Blue fishing about 10 miles out in the Atlantic until 2:30am! Man those fish battle, its almost like they don't want to get caught? :-)

NETCONG, NEW JERSEY WWAC EVENT
I was lucky enough to see this event up close with a few friends. I flew into Philadelphia, PA before the event and met Tim Jester, from Houston, TX. He had also flown in for the event and to hang out. We were both picked up (in a limo!) by Joe Darrah and Mike Bainton. Both are champion knife throwers and 2 of greatest people I've been lucky enough to call friends... You guys are the "shizzle" :-)

Anyway, I got to meet lots of throwers, there were old friends, and soon to be new ones. Big thanks to everyone for making it happen. Like the folks at the WWAC, Thomi Hawk, Cowboy Larry and I'm sure there are more that I'm forgetting. And also a big congrats to all those who observed or participated. I was the score keeper for the event with Sue and Shiloh Darrah on back up checking my 'rithmetic. Che Che WhiteCloud was also in attendance and "cheered" the throwers on with the rest of us!

Mike Bainton from bakido.com took 1st place, Damon Wilson took 2nd, and my buddy Tim Jester took 3rd in his first ever competition! Some of the other throwers who showed up were Ed "The SlugMan" Imperatore from South Jersey, Miodrag Cirkovic, Joe McCollough, Ethan Ramsey (aka Lightning) and Tim Valentine from the "Sticking Point" Web Site!

It was a fun day, thanks to all of you for making it that way! That's all for now. Have fun throwing and be safe!

Beware of flying metal! :-)

2. GUEST COLUMN

FUN, FUN, FUN AT THE MOOSE TRAX OPEN THROW
By Jack Harrill - Moose Trax Forge

Well, you probably want the scores, but they are nothing compared to the day we had. Once again, I would like to thank my son Isaiah and the landowners, Terry and Jerry Barlow for everything they did. This event would not have happened without a tremendous amount of work on their parts. The event was in four parts. There was a range throw, a woodswalk, a combat course and an "anything throw". (As an interesting note, Joe Darrah was the only one that had to try to stick the horse bit :-)

The range consisted of 20 throws with the knife and 10 throws with a hawk. The maximum score for each throw was 2 points for the bullseye and 1 for a stick in the other part of the target. The maximum possible score was 60 points.

The woodswalk consisted of 15 separate stations. There were 24 throws with one station that allowed as many implements to be thrown as was possible in the time allowed. All of the targets were worth one point. Consequently, there was a 24 point maximum.

The combat course had 9 stations and 12 targets. All of the targets on this course had both a head and torso. The heads counted for 2 and the torso counted for one. Max. score for this was 24 points.

The anything throw consisted of 6 throws. There were no actual throwing tools available for the throwers. There was a random drawing of numbers to start the process and then all the implements for throwing were calculated using my secret formula. There were 15 different items to be thrown. Maximum score for each throw was 2 points. The total for this section was 12. The top three scores belonged to:

Joe Darrah - 49
Ed Imperatore - 33
Ray Hamilton - 24

Joe won a hand forged custom thrower.
DP Ed selected a hand forged skinner.
Ray won a tomahawk, which he promptly turned upside down on the handle.

The other folks that participated were: Nick Salvati, Herb Taggart, Tristan Elric Taggart, Alan Tidd (The Sarge) and Galen Mayhew.

The folks that came were awesome. We had a goodly amount of folks watching as well. Everyone laughed together and cried together. (Actually, all I did was laugh). It is always amazing how much help and support the competitors give each other. No matter what the station or how everyone did, the sportsmanship was just stellar. I guess that it is just a part of this sport. Herb, Sarge and I all had our kids there. It is an activity that is "family friendly".

It was an honor to participate with a group of this caliber. Isaiah and I had a great time setting up the stations and running the event. I still have not been to another event, but am sure that this one is unique to the way things are done in New England.

Again, to everyone that came to the event or encouraged us, Thank You! If anyone has any specific questions, please contact me off list and I will try to get you an answer.

Here are a few words about the event from competitor Joe Darrah:

"Some (most) of the targets had branches hanging in the way of the targets, those that didn't had to be thrown weak handed (opposite than you usually throw with). Those that seemed simple as you approached had to be thrown at either from a tree stand, a tunnel, over something, under something or while standing on one foot on a rain soaked, slick log or tree stump. Like I said they don't call 'em "Maineiacs" for nothin!

" "Then it got hard, throwing from a rope bridge, the top of ladders, off a moving horse, hanging in a tree upside down from a repelling harness, swinging from a tree on a tarzan swing and throwing, and even throwing on the run at a couple of targets... it was a beautiful thing!"
