The 2008 San Diego Chucker

RESULTS

(Hold your mouse over the pictures and information about the pic will pop up)

The day of the event the practice range was open at 9am and you could tell. Loud thunking noises mixed in with a few nice 'clangs' was the tell tale sign :-)

After an hour or so of practice, the spear event was the first thing to take place. The target was a single log round with a human shaped heart on it that was painted bright red. Since Carl had a heart attack a few years back, he thought it would be funny to add little white splotches around the heart and then told everyone that they were fatty deposits like in his heart :-)

We threw 5 spears from 18 feet and there were a total of 17 participants. The scoring was 1,2 and 3 points. (Big thanks to Larry Hood for supplying most of the spears used! They are super tough and stick great!)

After everyone had thrown their round there was a tie for first place. And if there's gonna be a tie, then I guess the one for first place is the most exciting to throw in!

The tie was between Micah Posada and me. Now Micah is one smooth thrower! But he better be, otherwise his factory sponsored, 'Cold Steel' tattoo on his arm would seem a bit silly. (Who loves ya buddy?!?! :-)

Surprising to me, I got totally lucky with one of my last throws and hit a bullseye and took it by 2 points. (But Micah caught more fish than me a few days later so I think we're even?)

Here are the scores:

THE KNIFE EVENT
The knife event was the next thing to take place. It was split into 2 divisions based on looks. Oh wait, actually I think it was based on if you were a competition type thrower or one that threw more for fun once or twice a year :-)

The knife events are always a great time for me, even though I don't do as well in them. Just about every event I've been to, I have known, or have atleast talked to the majority of the people taking part. And it seems more like a smack talking contest between friends, than a knife throwing contest between competitors. Its where I get lots of my 'new material' for when I get home and see my friends that have already heard all my old jokes :-)

Here is Daniel Posada, Daniel Clark and Micah Posada.

I got to meet a few new guys this year like Jose Rogers (another 'funny man' - just what the Chucker needs :-) And Tony (sorry Tony I don't remember your last name, but he told me a great story about doing a walk for cancer that ended up being 24 hours long! Good guy in my book!) And there was also Bob Wining (a fellow angler in search of that elusive trophy fish). Everybody was great!

And I also got to run into a lot of old friends like Carl and Marilyn Geddes (the hostess' with the mostest), Daniel Clark (the other 'funny man' of the group) and his wife Angela. All I can say is 'Dano' is funnier than a monkey humpin' a football! And I mean that in the nicest possible way ;-) (Thanks for the night out on the town bud!)

And of course, Micah and Daniel Posada. Its usually a freak occurrence to find a 'guru' in any sport, but this family has 2 of them! And one of them I think is a 42 year old man hidden in a 3 foot tall kids body.

I'd like to mention that Daniel Posada (Micah's son) will no longer be allowed to throw in the Youth division. If you take a look at the scores, you'll notice he would have taken 3rd place in the Division 2 class! Not too shabby for a kid who just turned 11! Great job Daniel! And thanks for all the help making the signs and everything else you helped out with... you da man! :-)

Oh yeah, Division 2 throwers threw knives from a half spin and 1 full spin, and the Division 1 throwers threw 2 additional distances, 1 1/2 and 2 spins.

BLOWGUN EVENT
When I first got to San Diego I got to help set up targets and get everything ready for the event. One of the jobs I was assigned was to build a back drop for the blowgun target. The back drop started out as just a few sheets of foam board cut at angles and glued together so there was a flat board behind the target and then 2 side walls to hopefully catch any stray darts.

Well, a few hours later and after a couple great ideas from Marilyn (Carls wife) the target grew into something much cooler than what I had planned!

This is 'Woody The Wood Chuck', our blowgun target!

The blowgun target is named Woody. 'Woody the Woodchuck' to be exact. It is a 22" foam woodchuck archery target. When the backdrop and everything else was finished, 'Woody' was standing in sand, surrounded by branches, leaves, and camo paint. And since it was close to Halloween, we put a small pumpkin on top of his head as a bonus target.

Now before I post the scores, keep in mind that I was only aiming at the very small bonus target on top of Woodys head. I thought I had a good strategy :-) Well after 30 darts I realized I'm a horrible 'blowgunner' and should have aimed at the larger areas for points.

Oh well, no guts, no glory (and no blowgun trophy :-)

Here we have Larry Hood, 1st Place Blowgunner and spear maker extraordinaire!

The Chucker event has been taking place since 2001 and has taken place at Carl and Marilyn Geddes' home since the beginning.

Marilyn and Carl Geddes

Special thanks to the following folks who donated their time, which really helped things move along smoothly and some great raffle prizes:

A big thanks to Fred Caminite for running the blowgun range and helping out throughout the event, and also to everyone who donated prizes and time. People like Larry Hood for the many custom made spears he donated. Others like Micah Posada (The only factory sponsored knife thrower I know of) who donated knives and free tshirts for everyone who took part! Ron Horvitz also donated many prizes as well as Daniel Clark (glad I won the SOG axe Dano... thanks man! :-)

And we'd all especially like to thank Carl and Marilyn for still putting this event on! As anyone else who has put an event on knows, it costs quite a bit of time, money and sanity holding one of these. So a big thanks to them both for putting up with so many throwers in and out of their home that day and all that goes with it :-)

Hopefully we get to do it again next year!
